Surfactin, a lipopeptide type of biosurfactant produced by Bacillus subtilis can lower the surface tension of water from 72 mN/m to 27 mN/m (Ohno et al., 1995). It has wide range of
applications in medicinal and other fields. When first synthesized by Arima et al. (1968) its output was only 50–100 mg/L in a 24 hr culture. Encouraging results have been obtained during the last four decades in improving the yield of surfactin (Cooper et al.,1981; Sen and Swaminathan, 1997; Wei and Chu, 2002; Yeh et al., 2005; Gudina et al., 2015b). Table 1 presents the yield of surfactin obtained by different investigators using agro based substrates.
