defined functional status
broadly, as the ability to perform tasks in multiple domains
such as physical function, social function, role function,
and psychological function. Functional status can be
viewed from various perspectives. Traditional models pertain
to functional status from the perspective of disability
or disablement, focused on the loss of function and
its effects on daily life (Stineman et al., 2005). Alternatively,
in the revised model we view functional status by
focusing on optimization of the function that remains.
Leidy’s (1994) framework for functional status is an example
of this perspective and it is a useful guide for health
care.
