It was said in The Analects that only a man who has the quality of ren has a basis for liking and disliking others (via judgment of human character).
The Analects also promote the idea of shu, which means reciprocity (= “the golden rule” = “Do not do to others what you would not wish them to do to you.”)
So we can see that in Confucianism one practices becoming a better person through one’s relationships. Relationships are important in Confucian teaching.
Another key concept is zhong, which means commitment, or doing one’s best.
