For women with any one lesion in WHO 3 or 4, progesterone-only methods should be used. The progestogen-only oral contraceptive pill (Cerazette) (taken daily), the sub-dermal implant (Implanon/Nexplanon) (lasting 3 years), and the depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) intramuscular injection (Depo-Provera) (lasting 3 months) are the more common, and highly effective progesterone-only contraceptives (if used as per manufacturers’ guidelines) that are readily available on prescription from GPs and familyplanning centres in Britain today. However, not all progesterone-only methods are suitable for some cardiac conditions.
