The interactions between the sensor and components of the harvesters were quantified by dropping the sensor on the three surfaces (catch plates, the tunnel wall, and the conveyor belt) on the harvester. Five drop heights were selected (15 cm, 30 cm, 60 cm, 90 cm, and 120 cm), with 20 replicates for each drop height. As the steel tunnel was a vertical surface, the sensor was tethered by a flexible string (120 cm in length) and swung in an arc to hit the side panel of the tunnel wall. The five vertical distances between the sensor and the point where the sensor contacted the vertical panel were the same as the drop heights selected for studies on catch plates and conveyor belt.
