Complex carbohydrates support a healthy pregnancy and aid the growth and devlopment of the baby. Pregnant women need to have about 8 servings of bread, cereals and/or grains each day. If you were already having this amount before you conceived, there is no need to increase this further. However, if you were only having 6 servings (or less) a day, then you should try and increase your servings to 8. This caters for your baby's needs and your body's increased metabolism. Breastfeeding women need around 8 to 9 servings per day (or more, depending on their level of physical activity), at least for the first 6 months of breastfeeding.
