Five papers were chosen because it is close to the
logistic limit of how many can be prepared ‘‘simultaneously’’;
in addition, the sample size had to be small
enough so each volunteer (5) would have enough time to
examine each of the reaction papers within a 5-minute
span. Any more papers or volunteers would cause an
unacceptable delay between the first and last volunteer.
The total number of readings (15) for each a-amanitin
quantity was believed to be sufficient for the determination
of the detection limit (defined as the lowest quantity
with 100% agreement).
