Forests and forestry in Japan was lectured by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomoko Seyama, Department of Forest Science, and Faculty of Regional Environment Science. Two of three area parts in Japan is mountainous. The total forest area in Japan is divided into two parts, which are 60% natural forests and 40% man-made forests. After the end of World WarII, forest rehabilitation has increased forest area in Japan, which is more than 10 million ha of man-made forest. Most of the species of man-made forest are coniferous trees, which made up 68% of the total man-made forest area. The coniferous trees which are the major plantation tree in Japan are Sugi (Criptomeria japonica) and Hanoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa). The two species produce high quality timber used for house construction.
