There is another approach. Some researchers are arguing that there is an urgent need to
reconcile tourism growth with its negative contribution to climatic change (Dubois and
Ceron, 2006). No longer can tourism be positioned as a stimulus for local economies in
developing countries; there is a need for the tourism sector to appraise its wider external-
ities as well as the economic benefits that it accrues. Simpson et al. (2008, p. 12) comment:
This, however, demands that the sector adapts to climate change, and as important, reduces its
contribution to climate change through emissions of greenhouse gases, and the overall
environmental footprint of tourism. Both aspects require substantial changes in the tourism
production system.
