Patients who will be initiated on antipsychotic medications should undergo baseline measurements including weight, body mass index and fasting triglyceride levels, and they should provide a family history of diabetes.
The next step should include monitoring the patients and switching them to different medication if need be.
Finally, if the patients have dyslipidemia, are prediabetic or diabetic, it is imperative to obtain their fasting glucose levels, blood pressure and waist circumference measurements before treatment initiation and throughout treatment.
Antipsychotics with high risk of cardiometabolic risk may be bestavoided in this instance.
