Advantages of the Solvay Process
The Solvay process is an economical industrial process. The raw materials, sodium chloride and calcium carbonate, are easily obtained and are relatively cheap. Ammonia gas and carbon dioxide are recycled in the Solvay process. This makes the process cost-efficient.
The recycling of chemicals also minimises the production of industrial waste. In this process, the only waste product is calcium chloride. Some solid calcium chloride is recovered for use as a dessicant (i.e. a drying agent) or as road salt.
