The 12 Week Year gives you a structure for achieving your goals. The building blocks are the 12 weeks. You set goals for the week, block in times when you will be working on your goals to the exclusion of all else, and then measure your progress at the end of the week.
You keep yourself accountable by measuring your progress and scoring the results against a set of “lead and lag” indicators. Lag indicators measure your progress towards your 12 week goals. Lead indicators measure daily and weekly actions that will help you achieve your goals.
By measuring your progress in this way, you stop kidding yourself that you are “making progress” when in reality you are not. Measuring results against clear goals is an excellent way to take ownership and become accountable to yourself.
