The accumulation
of these crystals in the joint space and synovial
lining triggers an inflammatory response,
and the patient experiences intense pain and
swelling. Over time, some of the crystals can
build up in connective tissue forming hard,
slowly expanding lumps of crystals known as
tophi. Initially they cause no symptoms in this
form, but over time, they can cause progressive
irreversible damage to the joint and bone with
associated pain and stiffness on movement of
the joint
