The city museum was originally built in 1877, to a classical design by local architect, Christoph Kunkler. Unfortunately, over the years, the museum fell into decline and at one point, demolition was seriously considered. However, in the early 1980s, it was decided to renovate the building and a competition was held to find an architect, which was won by Marcel Ferrier. The architect's most visible intervention is the addition of two segmented circles of space, constructed at basement level that house temprary exhibitions and multipurpose rooms. Located on the north and south sides of the building, they appear on plan to be separate parts of one huge circular space. A new entrance was formed in the existing western pavilion, and from here a ramp connects directly to the new underground rooms. Under the east and west ends, Ferrier also created new homes for the natural history and the 20th Century art collections.
