Batch fermentation was performed in the same nutrient medium as explained in the previous
section. The construction of the 2-L stirred-tank is shown in Fig. 1. Air with a pressure at the
system input of 67 mm Hg was blown through a glass sparger using an air compressor. A
cellulose acetate syringe filter, grade 0.22 µm, was placed on the system input in order to provide
sterility. The system was placed on Hot Plate Stirrer T-14 (LAB COMPANION, Korea), which
provided a constant agitation speed. For the inoculation, a 5 % w/v seed culture was used.
Fermentation was performed under the following conditions: working volume 1.5 L, temperature
25±2 ºC, aeration rate 1 vvm and agitation 150 rpm. After 8 days of cultivation, the biomass was
isolated and lyophilized for further use. The fermentation broth was used for the isolation of
exopolysaccharides
