2.1.1. Basket weave method
For a 2 by 2 or a 3 by 3 matrix, one can use the so-called basket weave method, however, for larger matrices,
this pattern is not generalized. The method of minors and cofactors, which is given in the text, can also be
used. An alternative method is called pivotal condensation. The basket weave method can be used to find the
determinant of a 2 by 2 matrix by lines drawn with arrows on the two diagonals. The lines move from the left
to the right, the direction we usually write.
