Although licensors have quality control over the images on licensed products, they do not control all operations of the licensees. Licensees are independent businesses, and as such conduct their business as they see fit. But licensors have come under criticism for this as well: Recently the NBA was forced by public pressure to pull from its Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan $60 sweatshirts imported from Myanmar (formerly Burma). The National Labor Committee (NLC), an antisweatshop organization, accused the league of violating a federal law against selling products from Myanmar. The director of NLC said the country is “one of the most vicious dictatorships in the world,” where workers are paid as little as seven cents an hour.
