What I Did: My very first job (not out of college, but first in general) was at my local library. I am so grateful for the experience. I was a volunteer, but became paid due to a work experience program at my high school. My manager was really nice, which I can't say for some of the other "real" job managers I've had.
It was a monotonous job, but taught me responsibility. I stacked books, alphabetized books, put security stickers on magazines, trained a volunteer.
I was able to take resume building classes at night that we got paid for, once a week. There was only one librarian who was condescending.

What I Did: My first job was during high school (in the 1960's) when I became a "stringer" covering high school sports for the (long defunct) daily newspaper in Long Branch, NJ. Getting paid to watch high school sports and then write a story was probably the best job I ever had! I should have never let my career path get diverted. I'd have loved a life as a sportswriter.
