How to Use the Strategy
1. Create a set of Reciprocal Learning sheets to distribute to each student
pair.
2. Break students into pairs and model the cooperative skills needed
to play the roles of coach and player.
3. Instruct Player A to work through the exercises on his sheet, while
the coach uses the “Coach’s Hints” on her sheet to help Player A to the
answers.
4. Help the coach, not the player, if the partnership is experiencing
difficulties.
5. Have students reverse roles. Player A becomes the coach, while the
coach becomes Player B. Player B then works through the exercises on
her sheet while Player A coaches her.
6. Include a cooperative challenge for students to solve together after
they have both served as player and coach.
7. Help students reflect back on the lesson and their own roles as
player and coach.
