Thailand (Security Rating: 3) - Protesters Threaten to Disrupt Air Traffic Operations: A small group of anti-government protesters has threatened to significantly escalate the "Shutdown Bangkok" action on Jan. 15 unless Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra steps down. The protesters have vowed to block the entrance to the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (Aerothai) on Soi Ngam Dupli road in Sathon district (map). As Aerothai acts as the networking center linking air traffic control posts across the country, the protest could potentially disrupt all air traffic in Thailand, as well as planes traveling through the country's airspace. However, it is likely that Aerothai will position extra workers in its facility starting late Jan. 14 in a bid to ensure continued operations and minimize disruptions. Protesters are also threatening to block access to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) (map) starting Jan. 15. The protests will be in addition to ongoing demonstrations already occurring at Pathumwan, Lat Phrao, Chaeng Wattana, Victory Monument, Lumpini Park, Ratchaprasong, and Asok-Sukhumvit (map). Anti-government leaders have threatened to continue these actions indefinitely until Yingluck agrees to resign; most officials predict that the protests will only last from three days to a week.
