Because the crustal model is independently derived from the mantle model, this cannot be attributed to the well-known trade-off effect when data are jointly inverted. However, if the amplitude of anomalies in the crust are incorrect, then it is possible that artifacts of this type are introduced, although as the differences between the ambient noise and AuSREM models indicate, such artifacts would lose amplitude rapidly with depth.
Most of the detailed mantle features that are observed in Fig. 10 and Fig. 11 are a function of the teleseismic data. However, the longer wavelength structures are inherited from the AuSREM mantle model (Fig. 6).
