We call this religion “Pure Land,” but Sukhavati itself is generically “a pure land (small-case letters),” since other heavenly places could also be pure lands.
In fact, we have already heard of the Western Paradise from Daoist and popular Chinese (not only Buddhist) tradition. Laozi, traditionally regarded as the founder of Daoism, was said to have rode off to Amitabha’s Western Paradise on the back of a water buffalo, and was never seen again.
