Patients in this study expressed a range of self-care abilities which represents huge potential for accelerated postoperative rehabilitation.
In a recent study (Olsson et al. 2007) on
patients with a hip fracture, it was concluded that there was a great deal to be gained, such as better pain relief, more effective mobilisation and less time in hospital, by listening to the patients and by applying individualised care.
This approach included active assessment of the patients’ postoperative pain, especially during mobilisation.
Continuous assessment should be undertaken to facilitate recovery and rehabilitation.
