Procedure
The teacher should first model reading of the text. Showing how to read with expression and appropriate rate.
The teacher allocates parts to groups of children. Different sections of the story or poem can be read in the following ways.
- Unison (the whole group reads at the same time)
- Refrain (an individual reads the narrative and group reads the refrain )
- Antiphonal (small groups instead of individuals are given parts to read )
- Sequential (speaking lines one after another)
- Cumulative (voices are added as the story or poem develop)
The reading is repeated several times to improve fluency and expression.
Props, sound effects and movement can be added.
Perform for a real audience if possible.
(shared reading often includes some choral reading.)
