SODIUM CROMOGLYCATE
Topical intranasal sodium cromoglycate is
an effective first line treatment for seasonal
allergic rhinitis. It effectively controls the itch
and the rhinorrhoea but has no effect on
blocked nose. It is most effective if commenced
at the beginning of spring or when the pollen
counts start to rise. It is an extremely safe drug,
but its duration of action is short so it should
be sprayed into the nose 4-6 times a day.
DECONGESTANTS
Nasal decongestants work by constricting the
dilated blood vessels in the nasal mucosa.
The nasal membranes are effectively shrunk,
so that drainage of mucus and circulation of
air are improved and the feeling of nasal
stuffiness is relieved. These drugs may be
given orally or topically. Tablets and syrups
are available, as are nasal sprays and drops.
If nasal sprays and drops are to be used the
pharmacist assistant must advise the patient
not to use the topical products for longer
than 7 days as rebound congestion can occur.
Decongestants are recommended for short
term use only
