Immobilized cells are less susceptible than free cells to the effect of certain inhibitory compound, pH variation and nutrient depletion [5]. Among the several immobilization support materials, calcium alginate offer several advantages such as good biocompatibility, low cost, easy availability, and ease of preparation [6]. However, there are some disadvantages associated with their use, such as gel degradation, low mechanical strength (causing cells to be released from the support) and large pore size [4] and [7]. Therefore, these limitations do not favor stability of alginate immobilized beads in continuous system for longer time. Several studies have described continuous ethanol production using Ca-alginate immobilized yeasts with different bioreactor configurations [4], [8] and [9]. Among them, packed bed reactor (PBR) has gained popularity due to its lower manufacturing and operating costs with higher ethanol productivity [8].
