During the latter part of the nineteenth century, France was changing from a more rigid society, based on upper-class privilege to a more flexible society with a larger middle class. Impressionism mirrored this new form of society, and therefore became more popular than the academic style which reflected the old order. In terms of the cultural diamond, this explanation is clearly based in the reflection apporach.
