One factor that continues to fuel conflict is ignorance of other religions, particularly ignorance of Islam. While it is understandablegiven repressive state tactics—that Muslim communities in Myanmar have been relatively insular with regard to religious practice, some Muslim leaders have decided that increased transparency will foster mutual understanding and grant them more control over narratives regarding Islamic practice. The intention here is not to blame the victims, but to recognize that increased understanding of what other religious traditions practice or believe will be an important part of contesting rumor, challenging prejudice, and eventually building trust between communities.
