Attention-getting techniques, like streaming video, appeared initially to give television an advantage over print media in covering the natural disaster. Television footage showed torrents of water carrying away cars and uprooted trees. This dramatic video, coupled with a voice-over explaining the destruction caused by the floodwaters, painted a powerful image of the disaster. However, the still photography utilized by newspapers also created effective images. One photograph of a survivor clinging to a tree as a rescue helicopter maneuvered above him was equally effective.
