Burns due to flame were often caused by the gas flame which is used most often for cooking food in Kosovo. Contact burns with hot objects were commonly caused by electrical stoves used for cooking; the other cause of burns in children was pyrotechnic devices such as firecrackers associated with the Kosovar practice of celebrating various holidays usually during New Year and Kosovo’s day of independence; burns caused by lightning were noted in two cases, both of which involved male children who cared for livestock grazing in open fields.
