According to the present study, in spite of superiority of IMT technique for improving the two pulmonary parameters (MVV and PImax), using incentive spirometry could be a good complementary method for pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD patients. In addition, incentive spirometry is a simple device that can easily be used at the bedside for inspiratory muscle training. Thus, incentive spirometry can be used as an important component of routine rehabilitation protocol for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Also, the authors recommend that incentive spirometry be included in the teaching materials for rehabilitation of patients with COPD. This will greatly enhance nurses’ abilities to provide COPD patients with more feasible and accessible care.
