North America’s principal waterfowl breeding ground, the Prairie Pothole Region, is characterized by geographically isolated wetlands ( i.e., prairie potholes). In arid and semi-arid regions, isolated wetlands (e.g., Rainwater Basin wetlands, Sandhills wetlands, playas, salt lake wetlands, and Channeled Scablands wetlands) are oases for resident and migratory wildlife (providing needed food and water) and vital stepping stones for wetland-dependent birds migrating across these dry landscapes.
