Our doctor has a wonderful way of talking to parents. He would always frame his conversation in a way that gave permission to the family to stop. Rather our consultant would sort of say “We will take responsibility for it. If you are agreeable, we will take the responsibility”. He would always go into a family meeting and start with the child’s name and say ‘He really is having a tough day isn’t he?” He always kept the baby as the main focus of the discussion, not the parents. We would support them and we would take responsibility for the decision to withdraw, not the parent. (NICU FG 31-01)
