Human beings are encouraged to consume more vegetables and fruits, which are a good source of vitamins, minerals,
fibres and also beneficial to their health. However, these plants contain both essential and toxic metals over a wide
range of concentrations. It is well known that plants take up metals by absorbing them from contaminated soils as
well as from deposits on parts of the plants exposed to the air from polluted environments (Chojnacha et al.,2005;
Khairiah et al.,2004). Heavy metal accumulation in soils is of concern in agricultural production due to the adverse effects on food safety and marketability, crop growth due to phytotoxicity and environmental health of soil organisms.
