3.2. PCB analysis
The shrimp oil contained 58.6 ng g1 PCBs. In the study by Bourdon
et al. (2010), the PCBs in the 14 animal-derived x-3 PUFA supplements
tested ranged from 0.8 to 793 ng g1 and in a previous
study by Rawn et al. (2008), PCBs were found to range between
0.7 and 519 ng g1 when excluding the high concentration (i.e.
10,400 ng g1) obtained for shark oil. The PCBs concentration in
the shrimp oil generated in this study was below the range average
but higher than the tested crustacean oil (i.e. krill oil) which only
contained 2.3 ng g1. The total PCBs daily intakes ranged from5.4 to 19.2 ng kg BW1 day1 (Table 4) and were all lower than the
TDI value established by WHO at 20 ng kg BW1 day1. Based on
this information, the shrimp oil obtained from P. borealis harvested
of the Labrador coast of eastern Canada, when used as a source of
x-3 PUFA supplement, would not represent a risk to consumers.
