2.2. Feed characteristics
Liquid wastes treated in this work are generated at radioimmunoassay
laboratories. These wastes are stored in 25 liter containers at
the hospital and they all contain 125I as radioisotope. The main physical
and radiological characteristics of this radionuclide are shown in
Table 1.
Experiments were carried out at the radioactive storage facility of
the hospital, where there is no analytical equipment. Besides, it was
not possible to take samples out of the facility. For all these reasons,
it was impossible to make a complete analysis, so neither organic
nor microbiological content could be measured. Thus, the main parameters
measured for waste characterization were: conductivity, activity
and pH. Variation ranges of these parameters in the wastes used
for experiments are shown in Table 2.
