For the present study, a subset of the data collected from Cheerleading RIO,consisting ofstrain/sprain-related injuries sustained by cheerleaders on US cheerleading teams, was analyzed. Because most data reporters for our study were team coaches, as opposed to trained medical personnel (only 28% of the teams had a dedicated AT) [10], no attempt was made to differentiate between strains and sprains or to grade the severity of the strains/sprains reported during the study. The following injury cases were deleted: a college cheerleader documented as a 14-year-old and an elementary school cheerleader documented as a 15-year-old.
