The engine considered in the analysis is single cylinder
DI turbocharged research engine, based on the 500 series of
DaimlerChrysler. The basic engine characteristics are given
in Table 1. The compressor has been replaced by a blower,
while the turbine by a nozzle having an equivalent flow
area to provide a similar mean exhaust gas pressure to the
real engine. A high-pressure loop for the recirculation of
exhaust gases to the compressor discharge was used. The
specific engine has been developed under EU project
‘‘HEDE’’ and can withstand high peak combustion
pressures up to 280 bar [7].
