Learn more about mangosteen in this short webinar.
The Mangosteen is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia. Its botanical name is Garcinia mangostana and is grown in tropical areas of both the western and eastern hemispheres. It is referred to as ‘the queen of fruits’ in Asia. The entire fruit is typically 2.5–7.5 cm in diameter, roughly the size of a tangerine. The white, inner pulp of the mangosteen fruit is highly praised as one of the best tasting of all tropical fruits. The mangosteen fruit is rich in xanthones that are a group of polyphenolic compounds, which are similar in structure to bio-flavanoids and are biologically active. Xanthones, along with their derivatives, have been scientifically proven to have many benefits. Xanthones provide beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and thrombosis. Mangosteen is gaining immense popularity as a delicacy and a fine dessert ingredient. It can be used in salads, sorbets, smoothies, etc.
