The clinical group comprised patients who represented the major psychiatric categories being treated at the University of Minnesota hospitals. These patients were divided into clear subgroups of approximately 50 in each category of diagnosis. If a patient's diagnosis was at all in question, or if a person had a rnul t iple diagnosis, he or she was excluded from the study. The resulting subgroups were hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, psychopathic deviate, paranoia, psychasthenia, schizophrenia, and hypornania. .
