The procedure is explained to the patient to gain informed consent, reduce anxiety and ensure he or she is alble to continue. The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic and it is necessary for the patient to be able to lie flat and still on the operating table for about 30 minutes. If for any reason the individual is unable to do this,a general anaesthetic may be considered.
Patients, social circumstances need to enable them to avoid heavy or dirty work for several weeks after the operation, and they are asked to arrange transport home after the procedure. It is imperative that they,or someone reliable, are able to instill their eye drops as prescribed.
Once the specialist nurse is happy with these arrangements, the eyes are examined for any signs of infection;anysuch infection should be treated before surgery. If the patient is physically fit and willing to proceed, the nurse will then carry out several specific investigations to ensure the best.
