Laws define who is allowed to work in a lodging or hospitality establishment, and in some cases the hours that are permissible for work. The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) places responsibility on the employer to assure that all applicants have the legal right to work in the United States. IRCA requires managers to have documentation that each applicant or employee is a citizen or documented alien with permission to work. Figure 6-5 shows the types of documentation acceptable as evidence of a worker’s eligibility for employment. Heavy fines can be imposed for improper hiring.
