Multiplexing of services and transport refers to the division of each bit stream into
information packages, to the uniqueness in the identification of each package or type
of package, and to the methods appropriate to the interleaving or multiplexing of the
streams of video, audio, and data in only one transport mechanism. The structure and
the relationships of this one bit stream are transported in the stream of information
services and are multiplexed in only one transport mechanism. The digital television
system makes use of the MPEG-2 transport syntax for packaging and multiplexing of
video, audio, and data signals for the transmission systems.
In the development of the transport mechanism, interoperability between the digital
media, such as terrestrial transmission, cable distribution, recorded media, and computer
interfaces, is the first consideration.
