one of these ceremonies is choosing a name for a baby
Indians have a great attachment with names, our rich culture and heritage offers various roots for our diverse names. A lot of our names have their roots in our history through pre-vedic era. Most common names are inspired by our Gods/Goddesses, nature, epics (Ramayana to Panchatantra), and some are derived from the fields of Arts and literature. Until recently many names would be a combination of two or more inspirations e.g. Deshbandhu (Desh+bandhu) or Shivprasad (Shiv+prasad). Name recycling was also a common technique, that is to name your kid after one of the grand parents etc.
Modern Indian names like India itself are changing. Today's parents want to give their kids unique names at the same time balancing other attributes. A lot of the criteria now applied:
A name should be short and sweet
A name should have a good literal or implied meaning
Easy pronounciation
Does not have a bad meaning or variation in other prominent languages
Will last the "Fashion" test for next many years
In addition trends are also set by omnipresent Indian movies and soaps. A trendy name may bypass a lot of other requirements. For example recently the movie Khushi or Krysh inspired many people with those names.
Whatever be the reasoning, once chosen a name is forever. Hence, give it your best!
