I needed to read credit cards into my website - something a volunteer could use without being tech-savvy. This MSR90 replacement reader handles that just fine.
Pros
- Read every magstripe I could find around the house (a number of Visa cards)
- Fast shipping from this seller - ordered Friday before a three-day weekend, received the following Wednesday (essentially overnight)
Cons
- As others have mentioned, cheap build quality. These readers tend to be purchased in bulk overseas and sold piecemeal.
- No buzzer when card is swiped (LED does blink once when you swipe, though)
- Shipped in a plain brown box with zero packing materials, instructions, receipt, bill of lading, software, etc. That's sketchy, seller.
This reader is programmable. Since the item description is vague on this point and there are NO instructions or other materials included in the box, here's what that means:
- You can tell the reader what separators to put before and after each track. This can be useful if you want to use this with a particular accounting package, for example, that requires specific separators to be used. In a similar vein, if you only care about Track 1 (credit card's first name, last name, number, and expiration date) and you're writing custom software to use with the reader, you can make the reader conform to your software.
- You can turn each track on and off
- You can toggle between US and non-US keyboard layout
- You can configure the reader to send ENTER after each track or after the entire card is read. You can also have it send no ENTER.
However, you can't do any of this unless you have the configuration utility that you didn't get from the product description or the Amazon vendor (shame shame).Read more ›
