Group XIII – Spirilla
These are very large bacteria that are coil shaped. They can be pathogenic to humans. Some are nitrogen fixers, while others are halotolerant or thermophilic.
Magnetospirillim magnetotacticum exhibits magnetotaxis. It aligns itself with the earth magnetic field.
Bdellovibrio preys upon other bacteria. It attaches to bacteria, and penetrates the cell wall. Inside the host bacteria, bdelloplasts are formed. Upon the bacteria’s death, the bdelloplasts are released.
