Let us look at the relationships between the variables of hypotheses 1 to 3 in
Figure 5.2. We see that the general increase of available resources in a society has
only an indirect effect on the development of new SMOs – via “available resources
to SMSs.” Thus, two variables affect the “development of new SMIs and SMSs.”
Among the major phenomena to be explained according to the goal of the article –
namely the growth, decline, change, and success of social movements – only the
growth (or the emergence) of movements is addressed by the eleven propositions.
Further, only two variables are specified that directly affect SMO emergence. The
box around “development of new SMIs and SMSs” symbolizes that this is one of
the central variables the RMP tries to explain.
