Oral antimicrobial agents should include penicillinase-resistant penicillins such as cloxacillin, dicloxacillin, or the combination of a penicillin (i.e.amoxicillin) and a beta-lactamase inhibitor (i.e.clavulanic acid). Parenteral therapy may be required
in patients who show toxicity. Patients allergic to penicillin can be treated with a macrolideor clindamycin. Treatment should be administered for at least 14 days.
