After that, we discussed as a class with Melissa why she was incorrect and we found out that she was confused and thought that cause had to be a “bad thing.” After further discussing this with her, we decided to give more student examples and give Melissa another shot. This time she used something much more simple, and was able to identify the cause and the effect. A few days later, we did a lesson on Cause and Effect in nature. 100% of the students were able to go outside and find one or two examples of how cause and effect is used in nature. Melissa improved vastly in just one day (see table 1f).
