The most famous support group in the world began in 1935, in Akron, Ohio when two men met and talked about their experiences with alcohol. Bill was a recovering alcoholic1, and Bob was an alcoholic who wanted to stop drinking. Whenever Bob got depressed, Bill encouraged him not to drink. With Bill’s support, Bob stopped drinking and stayed sober. This was the beginning of Alcoholics Anonymous or AA. In an AA meeting, members come together to share their experiences and fight their need for alcohol or drugs. AA has over two million members all over the world, and it’s the model for many other support groups.
